Nuclear deal good, very good, not so good or bad for India? This is being discussed in press. Political parties or persons with their political affiliations take positions which cannot be called objective?
Positive aspects are stated as :
- It will enable India to meet energy requirement
- There will be supply of much needed uranium
- It will end duel use technology transfer apartheid in many areas
- Nuclear energy is preferable to other thermal power as it is without green house gases
- There will be huge FDI
- India has virtually been accepted as nuclear weapon state without signing NPT
Negative aspects are stated as:
- The deal has compromised India's sovereignty as far as nuclear weapon development and consequently compromised countries security
- Deal benefits economies of supplier countries rather than that of India
- Thorium research will get lower priority
- Our nuclear programme will be under outside surveillance
- World over nuclear power is not a preferred energy source. Developed countries have abandoned its expansion
- The power generated from nuclear sources will be much costlier and will bleed India.
- Expected nuclear power can be generated by saving transmission losses and efficient power use
- America has pursued the deal keeping in view its own interest both economic and political
All the above aspects have some element of truth. Common man is confused. One question comes to my mind. Was there really a need to rush through the deal. World will have to accept us as a regular member of nuclear club. I think only time will provide answer
